Synesthesia

from Undercurrent by Michele McLaughlin

/

about

I wrote Synesthesia while I was on tour in the summer of 2013. I was in Boston, at M. Steinert & Sons, and it was pouring rain that day, so we asked them if we could hang out for a couple of hours before the show started. They had the most incredible Steinway D on stage, it was perhaps the best Steinway I'd ever played. I bonded and connected with that piano immediately. The music just came to me, and I composed this song while sitting in that hall waiting for our show to start. I deeply felt the music, I experienced it, I saw it, it moved me. It was a whole body experience that I'll never forget. Synesthesia means "a sensation produced in one modality when a stimulus is applied to another modality, as when the hearing of a certain sound induces the visualization of a certain color."
